How to Make Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
We love to make Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing! We not only use it on our salads, but we also dip our veggies, french fries, wings, pizza, and a plethora of other items in it. It’s always included when we’re setting the table for meals. For years we’ve been disappointed by the store-bought bottled versions. We’ve tried just about every brand there is, and none seem to be a good as the ranch dressing you get when you go out to restaurants that make their own. So of course, I did a little research and played with a few recipes until I was able to tweak my favorite into some really great homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing! The best part is, you only need a few ingredients and a few minutes to make this yourself!
As you know, I get everything out and ready before I make something to ensure I have all the ingredients and tools I will need. To make Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing you will need:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup Buttermilk
- 1 tsp Hidden Valley Buttermilk Ranch powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/8 tsp garlic powder
- 1/8 tsp paprika
- small mixing bowl
- small whisk (optional – can use fork)
- small funnel (optional)
- empty bottle/container (I save old glass bottles and re-use them!)
Here are some things I figured out while testing to get to the perfect recipe… you won’t want to use the “Cool Whip” version of Mayo, it will completely change the flavor and you won’t get the creamy Ranch that we’re going for! For the Buttermilk, it didn’t make a flavor difference whether we used the regular or the low-fat version, so we choose to use the low-fat, but you can use either. You can use the original Hidden Valley Ranch powder packet, or a generic, but the flavor will be best using the Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk version, so we always try to use it – but in a pinch, any ranch powder will work. The photo of ingredients above are the exact brands I use for the Mayo and Ranch powder, and recommend for the best results.
Measure out your ingredients into a small bowl and whisk/mix them up – it’s that easy! The hardest part is getting it into the bottle if you’re using something with a small neck like I do. Luckily I have a small funnel that I use to pour the Ranch in without making too much of a mess. If you don’t have a funnel, think about what kind of bottle you’ll keep it in, and how your going to get it there. One of my favorite bottles to use is an empty iced coffee bottle. You can use any bottle you have handy!
Once your Ranch is mixed and in the bottle, get it into the fridge. It has a richer flavor once it has the chance to rest a few hours. But don’t get me wrong – you can use it right away, we do, but it does taste even better after a few hours of letting the ingredients really permeate together! Keep it refrigerated and your Homemade Buttermilk Ranch will last up to 2-3 weeks (not that it will be around that long!).
So now you can make Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing yourself at home!
